Navigating the AI Revolution: Perspectives of Indian Graphic Designers in the Evolving Work Environment

Auteur(s) : Yesudas Thomas Yesudas ; Anakha Ajith ;

In the ever-evolving landscape of graphic design, artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the profession, automating routine tasks such as image editing and logo design, and sparking concerns about potential job displacement. However, AI also introduces innovative possibilities like AI-powered design assistants, prototyping tools, and personalized experiences, offering designers new avenues for creativity and collaboration. This paper delves into the impact of AI on Indian graphic designers, exploring their perceptions, experiences, and adaptations within the dynamic work environment.
To understand the complex interplay between AI and graphic design in India, a mixed-methods approach was employed, combining a survey and in-depth interviews with 135 graphic design professionals from diverse backgrounds and experience levels. The survey gathered quantitative data on designers’ awareness, adoption, and attitudes towards AI, while the interviews provided qualitative insights into their personal experiences, challenges, and opportunities in integrating AI into their workflows.
The findings reveal a range of perspectives among Indian graphic designers regarding AI’s impact on their profession. While some designers expressed optimism about AI’s potential to enhance creativity and collaboration, others harboured concerns about job displacement and the challenges of integrating AI tools into their workflows. The paper also highlights the importance of higher-order creative skills and the active pursuit of AI-related expertise for designers to thrive in this evolving landscape. It explores the varying perspectives of designers on AI’s ability to understand and empathize with users, emphasizing the need for human-centred design approaches in the age of AI.
Additionally, the paper discusses the challenges and opportunities of integrating AI into graphic design workflows. It highlights the learning curve associated with AI adoption, as well as the potential for AI to disrupt traditional design processes. The analysis extends to the efficiency gains brought about by AI tools, the impact on design aesthetics, and the role of AI in user feedback and prototyping.
Through its comprehensive exploration of designers’ perceptions, experiences, and adaptations, this paper provides a nuanced understanding of Artificial Intelligence’s impact on graphic design in India. It underscores the need for designers to embrace lifelong learning, adapt their skill sets, and forge symbiotic relationships with AI to navigate the transformative technological landscape of graphic design.
